Level Design
The Level Design is varied and polished. You can tell that the Designers took great care in ensuring an experience which would prevent any sense of monotony from creeping in as the game progresses. Each level takes place in a unique environment and the action is always non-stop! In one level, you’re battling outside of a large cathedral, using your partners to provide you with cover as you flank the opposition. In another level you’re trying to hold the fort inside of a mansion as the enemies attempt to force their way inside and up the staircase to your strategic sniping position. In yet another, you’re driving a heavily armored vehicle and using turrets to shoot down the oncoming swarm of vicious bats while trying to drive to safety. And, in another, you’re battling gigantic, Flying Locusts atop a runaway train! The game simply maintains that feeling of freshness hours into the game!

Enemy AI
The enemies in Gears of War aren’t pushovers by any stretch. Their shots are deadly, accurate, and lethal. Intelligently using grenades is a must, especially on higher levels where they come packed with extraordinary weapons and armor. Thing is, the enemies just aren’t the smartest buggers. They really don’t have a pack mentality; no sense of group coordinated attacks, retreats, flanks, etc. The enemy simply uses the shortest path algorithm, taking cover where needed, until the gap has been sufficiently closed in order to introduce your flesh to their steel.
